We realise that it sounds counter intuitive, putting holes in paddles, but there is good science behind the tech. Our sport technology grew from the Marine side of our business where we were tasked to mitigate underwater radiated noise (URN) from propeller cavitation. We developed a technology called PressurePores, a series of small, angled holes on the leading edge of the propeller blade that helps reduce pressure fluctuations leading to a significant reduction in cavitation and URN. Having noticed these pressure variations on the propeller we wondered if the technology would be applicable to oars and paddles. So, we carried out extensive CFD modelling, looking at different hole shapes, to create the most efficient paddle blade. The result after 3 years of testing is a blade that transfers input power into driving force more efficiently by improving the flow dynamics of the stroke and significantly reduces stress on the paddler’s body. A great result all round! Check out our website for further details and testimonials - https://oscarpropulsion.com/sport
